RGV: If free speech is controlled then what’s the meaning of it?

The Mumbai police has initiated a probe on a complaint against comedian Tanmay Bhat for making a video of a mock conversation with Lata Mangeshkar and Sachin Tendulkar, and several Bollywood celebrities turned to Twitter to react to the controversy.

In a series of tweets, Ram Gopal Verma: ‘Though I love Ashaji's singing better I respect Lataji as much as anybody else but more than both of them I love free speech. If people's free speech has to be controlled then what's the meaning of free speech?

‘Democracy is about having the freedom not to like what someone said but it's also about fighting for his or her right to say it..Ayn Rand

‘Tanmay's AIB is a mirror to hypocritical multiple standards of a degenerate feudal mindset which masquerades as a free speech democracy. Any society which can't take a joke on it's own various elements is a sure sign of its internally plagued diseases of a fascist mind set.’

Sonam Kapoor: ‘Dear @thetanmay , being your friend I know what you say and do is never to offend, but to make people laugh. Don't you guys think there are issues that are more important than @thetanmay snapchat jokes??? I'm in shock with this over reaction! Being living legends I know @sachin_rt and @mangeshkarlata don't even know and care about what's going on!stop spewing hate on their behalf!’

Subhash Ghai: ‘People of india is terribly hurt by new comedy/jokes on elders icons the inspirations to generations. Learn to respect elders. Stop it here. Kapil sharma show is most popular comedy show today- has he ever hurt anyone or disrespect seniors icons legends?Let's learn from him. Dirtiest ugliest joke by Tanmay bhatt on icons of india -big shame n punishable. He claims-I wud walk naked in public -don't look at me if u don't like it. It's legal.’

Hansal Mehta: ‘Disturbing how the system believes it can prosecute somebody for a snapchat video while abusive trolls targeting common people go scot free.’

Ritesh Batra: ‘When I hear abt a comedian going to jail fr a bad joke, I wonder why people hv been getting away w/ farting in elevators & peeing in pools.’

Anubhav Sinha: ‘Too much anger for very little humor. We must direct our energies better.’
