Reese takes on controversial high-school murder

Even as America is still getting to grips with the alarming shootout at Virginia Tech last month, Variety magazine has declared that Reese Witherspoon's production house Type A Films is developing Under The Bridge.

Under The Bridge is based on Rebecca Godfrey's account of the 1997 murder of Reena Virk, born to Indian immigrants in Saanich, British Columbia. Godfrey, a resident of Saanich, researched the 8 high-schoolers charged in the case, and Virk's life.

The April shootings make this a controversial project from the get-go. Campus violence films The Killer Within and Dark Matter, the latter starring Meryl Streep, are two movies that have already been shelved as a fallout of the gun massacre.

Thirteen director Catherine Hardwicke may direct the film, but there is no word yet whether Academy Award-winning actress Witherspoon will star. She will next be starring in another Type A production, horror film Our Family Trouble.
