Weather stations planned in remote areas

The Indian Space Research Organisation has entered into an agreement with a private company to set up automatic weather stations, the Lok Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

In a written reply, Prithviraj Chavan, the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office said Antrix Corporation of the department of space has entered into an agreement with Hyderabad-based Astra Microwave Products for the production and installation of automatic weather stations.

He said such weather stations would have the capability to operate in remote areas and provide meteorological data from data sparse regions.

Weather data such as temperature, pressure, humidity, winds, rainfall, etc from these locations could be utilised in forecasting and monitoring of natural calamities, he added.

The Minister of State for Science and Technology Kapil Sibal told the Lok Sabha that the Survey of India needs to be modernised to a large extent and government has started the process.

He said the process would continue in the 11th Plan and particularly in the area of Aerial Digital Camera, ALTM Sensors, map publishing system and high-speed connectivity among others.
