Promoters richer by Rs 105,340 crore in Oct-Nov

In the two months beginning October 1, 2004, shareholders' wealth has appreciated by a whopping Rs 2,00,000 crore (Rs 2,000 billion) in the Indian equities market.

Promoters, including the Indian government which holds a sizeable stake in the public sector undertakings, are obviously the largest gainers.

Foreign institutional investors, which have invested around Rs 10,000 crore (Rs 100 billion) in the last two months are the second biggest gainers.

Financial institutions are third major gainers and the public and other shareholders come fourth in the gainers chart.

This study is based on the shareholding pattern of 2,100 companies as on September 30, 2004. These companies accounted for 94 per cent of the total market capitalisation. The market capitalisation of these companies has increased by 15 per cent (Rs 200,000 crore) to Rs 14,54,808 crore (Rs 14,548.08 billion).

The promoters are richer by over Rs 1,05,340 crore (Rs 1,053.40 billion), of which the government has a share of Rs 44,000 crore (Rs 440 billion). Private sector promoters are sitting on an additional Rs 61,100 crore (Rs 611 billion) of wealth.

The FIIs holdings have appreciated by Rs 23,649 crore (Rs 236 billion). The FIs have raked in Rs 10,677 crore (Rs 106.77 billion) as mutual funds saw their equity corpus appreciated by Rs 5,489 crore (Rs 54.89 billion). The Indian public got Rs 22,949 crore (Rs 229 billion).

The FIIs hold shares in 673 companies and their stake is currently valued at Rs 184,186 crore (Rs 1,842 billion). Most of the FIIs holding is in companies in the Sensex basket.

The FIIs realised gains of over 20 per cent each in ten Sensex stocks, while in another ten, these benefited from a 10-20 per cent price appreciation.
