Visa spending in India up 66%

Credit card major Visa has reported a 66 per cent jump in spending on its cards in India at $3.8 billion for the 12-months ended June 2005.

Visa's card sales volume which includes cash withdrawals at ATMs witnessed a year on year growth of 76 per cent at $23.8 billion, the company said announcing its India performance for the 12-month period.

The total Visa cards issued in the country increased by 42 per cent to 30 million.

Total number of Visa credit cards rose by 38 per cent to 9 million while the number of Visa debit cards grew by 45 per cent to 21 million.

"Thanks to our member banks in India, consumers are becoming more comfortable with electronic payments," Visa country manager Santanu Mukherjee said.

Visa has introduced Visa Money Transfer for easy remittances, Visa Bill Pay for online payment of utility bills, Visa Mobile top-up for mobile pre-paid cards through ATMs, Visa Gold Plus a bouquet of special offers for Visa Gold Card holders and the Visa Zero Liability Protection for cardholders protection against turbulent use of their cards.
