The Tata Consultancy Services on Thursday won the CII-Exim Bank award for business excellence. The award is given every year for achievement of business excellence as a measure of organisational competitiveness.

Haridwar unit of the Bharat Heavy Electronic won the CII-Exim Bank prize in the manufacturing category.

The awards were given at CII's 14th Quality Summit in Bangalore, which was attended by more than thousand delegates from across different sectors. The award was given by Karnataka Major and Medium Industries Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu in presence of CII President R Seshasayee, Exim Bank executive director S R Rao and former CII chairman and CII Institute of Quality Chairman K N Shenoy.

Seshasayee said that the companies, which won the awards were showing the way to others.

He called for the government and industry to come together to put the stamp of quality on India.

"We have made a mark in the services sector and Indian products are competing globally, but sadly India is still not a brand. We must focus on things like improving infrastructure and work towards inclusive growth," Seshasayee said.

TCS CEO and managing director S Ramadorai while accepting the award said that the company, which employed more than 67,000 people and touched a revenue of close to $ 3 billion by March 31, 2006, invested a lot in innovation, talent maximisation and delivery excellence.

Ramadorai said that the information technology sector had seen a vast change in the past years, which also helped TCS grow. "Information technology has become a management tool now. We have gone from being technical service provider to being business advisors," he said.

On the way forward, Ramadorai said TCS was aiming at being one of the top 10 global IT firms by 2010. Last year, Tata Motor's commercial vehicles unit had won the award and Infosys, Tata Steel and Maruti Suzuki are some of the companies, which won the award in the past.

Twenty companies including Appolo Hospitals, Bharat Electronics' Gaziabad unit and Canon India received commendation certificates for their strong commitment to excel.
