Sensex ends up 24 points, DLF gains 5%

The Sensex opened with a negative gap of 83 points at 14,726, and slipped to a low of 14,677 in early deals.

Buying at lower levels helped the index rebound into positive zone, and the index touched a high of 15,170 - up 493 points from the day's low - in mid-noon trades. The index, thereafter, pared gains and slipped into red in late trades. The Sensex finally settled at 14,833 - up 24 points.

Thus, the index shed 11% (1,844 points) in the last ten trading days during the 'sun outage' - from March 4 till Tuesday.

The NSE Nifty ended with a gain of 30 points at 4,533.

The BSE market breadth was fairly negative - out of 2,734 stocks traded, 1,920 declined, 747 advanced and 67 were unchanged on Tuesday.

Index movers

DLF gained over 5% to Rs 635. Hindustan Unilever advanced nearly 4% to Rs 231, and Ranbaxy added 3.5% at Rs 453.

TCS, Reliance Energy and Reliance Communications rallied over 3% each to Rs 817, Rs 1,228 and Rs 497, respectively.

Larsen & Toubro moved up 2.3% to Rs 2,764. Tata Motors, Bharti Airtel and Cipla advanced over 2% each to Rs 619, Rs 758 and Rs 204, respectively.

BHEL and ICICI Bank were up around 1.5% each at Rs 1,824 and Rs 768, respectively.

And shakers

Jaiprakash Associates plunged 3.5% to Rs 201. Tata Steel dropped 3% to Rs 639, and SBI slipped 2.5% to Rs 1,592.

Infosys, Reliance and ACC declined around 1.7% each to Rs 1,313, Rs 2,145 and Rs 759, respectively.

Grasim and ITC were down around 1.5% each at Rs 2,631 and Rs 183, respectively.

Value and volume toppers

Jaiprakash Associates topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 526.30 crore followed by Reliance Petroleum (Rs 310.20 crore), Reliance Capital (Rs 297 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (284 crore) and GSS America (Rs 274.30 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 2.78 crore shares followed by Jaiprakash Associates (2.55 crore), Reliance Petroleum (2.01 crore), Orchid Chemicals (1.13 crore) and GVK Power (1.09 crore).
