After opening with a positive gap of 110 points at 15,467, the Sensex slipped into negative zone to a low of 15,331 - down 136 points from the day's open. The index soon rebounded into positive zone, and displayed positive trend for the rest of the day. Realty stocks led the rally followed by metal and energy stocks.
The BSE Realty index surged 4.8% to 7,713. The Metal and Oil & Gas indices rallied 3.3% each to 14,845 and 10,355, respectively.
The Sensex touched a high of 15,798, and finally ended with a gain of 403 points (2.6%) at 15,760.
The NSE Nifty was up 122 points (2.6%) at 4,746.
The market breadth was negative on the BSE - out of 2,731 stocks traded, 1,458 declined, 1,214 advanced and 59 were unchanged on Friday.
Index movers
The new entrant in the Sensex - Jaiprakash (JP) Associates soared nearly 8% to Rs 236. The stock on Friday replaced Bajaj Auto in the index.
Reliance Energy and DLF zoomed around 8% each to Rs 1,296 and Rs 654, respectively.
ICICI Bank surged nearly 5% to Rs 878. Hindalco and NTPC rallied 4.5% each to Rs 182 and Rs 195, respectively.
Satyam advanced 4% to Rs 379. Larsen & Toubro moved up 3.7% to Rs 2,908.
Reliance and ITC gained around 3.5% each at Rs 2,322 and Rs 192, respectively.
Reliance Communications and TCS added 3.3% each to Rs 518 and Rs 804, respectively.
Infosys and Tata Steel were up 2.7% each at Rs 1,369 and Rs 715, respectively.
ACC, Tata Motors, Grasim and Cipla also finished with gains of 2-3% each.
And the shakers
Bharti Airtel dropped 3.3% to Rs 753. Mahindra & Mahindra shed 1.8% at Rs 649.
Ambuja Cements and Maruti were the othe notable losers at Rs 120 and Rs 835, respectively.

Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 2.88 crore shares followed by Reliance Petroleum (1.72 crore), Ispat Industries (1.39 crore), Power Grid (85.50 lakh) and Essar Oil (71 lakh).
