The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 91 points at 20,918, and touched a high of 20,986 in morning deals. Selling pressure at higher levels saw the index drop into negative zone in late morning trades.
Sustained selling in technology and select stocks saw the index slip to a low of 20,662 -- down 324 points from the day's high.
The Sensex finally ended with a loss of 99 points at 20,728. The NSE Nifty ended at 6,207, up 7 points.
The Smallcap Index advanced 1.4% to 12,869, and the Midcap Index added 1% to 9537.
The BSE IT index plunged 2.8% to 3,991, while the Oil & Gas Index soared over 2% to 14,117.
The NSE Nifty ended .....marginally (seven points) higher at 6,207.
The market breadth was marginally positive -- out of 2,881 stocks traded, 1,577 advanced 1,279 declined and 25 were unchanged.
Index shakers
Bharti Airtel tumbled 6% to Rs 907.
Wipro slumped 5% to Rs 461. Infosys plunged over 3% to Rs 1,530. TCS and Satyam shed 2.8% each at Rs 961 and Rs 399, respectively.
Maruti dropped nearly 5% to Rs 855. HDFC slipped 2.7% to Rs 2,977.
Mahindra & Mahindra, ACC and Bajaj Auto declined nearly 2.5% each to Rs 756, Rs 876 and Rs 2,459, respectively.
ICICI Bank and Hindustan Unilever were down over 2% each to Rs 1,409 and Rs 220, respectively.
...And the movers
NTPC soared 4.7% to Rs 285. Reliance surged nearly 3% to Rs 3,216.
BHEL, Reliance Communications and HDFC Bank advanced around 1.5% each to Rs 2,474, Rs 805 and Rs 1,788, respectively.
SBI and Ranbaxy were up 1% each at Rs 2,462 and Rs 399, respectively.

Value & Volume Toppers
Reliance Natural Resources topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 488.25 crore followed by Jaiprakash Associates (Rs 322.50 crore), Reliance Communications (Rs 196.60 crore), Reliance Petroleum (Rs 189 crore) and Reliance (Rs 176.70 crore).
Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 2.23 crore shares followed by Porwal Auto (1.99 crore), Ispat Industries (1.43 crore), Centurion Bank of Punjab (1.02 crore) and Reliance Petroleum (Rs 84.40 lakh).
