The markets had a good close just before the Fed meet; crossing some important barriers. It was a surprising rally before the event, buying was seen in scrips across sectors.
The Asian markets closed higher and the European markets opened in green on the back of dovish statement or may be a pause in interest rate hike being expected from the Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.
The Sensex closed with gains of 202.33 points or 1.87% at 11,014.97 above the 11000 level. Nifty closed above 3,200 for the first time since May 29. The Nifty gained 61 points to close at 3212. The banking stocks were controlling the dynamics of the market.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 5,299.21 up 82.92 points or 1.6%.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 4,410.16, up 51.29 points 1.18%.
The rally was seen in indices across sectors. All the BSE sectoral indices closed in the green. Bank stocks led the rally followed by capital goods and auto stocks.

The BSE Bankex was up 3.2% at 5,015.08. PNB, ICICI Bank, Oriental Bank, IOB and Bank of Baroda were among the gainers.
The BSE FMCG Index was up 1.9% at 1,892.32. McDowell, Shaw Wallace, Britannia and ITC closed in green.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was up 1.8% at 7,269.48. Ingersoll Rand, L&T, Bharat Elec, Siemens and Alstom Projects closed higher.
The BSE Auto Index added 1.7% at 4,600.72. Bajaj Auto, Maruti Udyog, Cummins, Tata Motors and Punj Tractors closed in positive terrain.
The BSE Metal Index advanced by 1.6% at 7,893.33. SAIL, Sterlite Ind, Hindalco, Tata Steel and Jindal Saw witnessed buying interest.
The BSE Health Care Index was up by 0.9% at 3,299.27. Divis Labs, GlaxoSmithKline, Wyeth, Sun Pharma and Matrix Lab were among the major gainers.
The BSE IT Index was up by 1% at 4,017.12 moved up. TCS, I-Flex Solution, Wipro, Infosys and HCL Tech jumped
The BSE Oil and Gas Index rose 0.79% at 5,049.79. Chennai Petro, ONGC, GAIL and Reliance advanced higher.
The BSE Consumer Durables Index gained 0.3% at 2,759.07. Samtel Color, Whirlpool, Su-Raj Diamonds, Titan Industries were up.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs4275.11 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 15166.25 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 2133.65 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 21575.01 crore.

The markets are trading in green with buying seen in scrips across sectors.
At 14.27 pm IST, the Sensex is up 137.77 points or 1.27% at 10950.41, and the Nifty up 40.60 points or 1.29% at 3191.7.
About 1451 shares have advanced, 856 shares declined, and 82 shares are unchanged.
Top gainers on the Sensex are ICICI Bank up 4.38%, L&T up 2.50% and Bharti Airtel up 2.42%.
Top gainers on the Nifty are PNB up 6.31%, ICICI Bank up 4.32% and GlaxoSmithKline up 2.96%.
Top losers on the indices are BHEL, Ranbaxy Labs, Cipla, Zee, BPCL and Tata Tea
Index heavyweight Hindustan Lever was trading at Rs 221.50 up 0.93% from its previous close of Rs 219.45.
Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 963.50 up 0.89% from its previous close of Rs 955.00.
Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,680.00 up 0.34% from its previous close of Rs 1,674.30.
Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 171.90 up 2.05% from its previous close of Rs 168.45.
Refinery major HPCL was trading at Rs 214.85 up 0.54% from its previous close of Rs 213.70.
Sensex @ 1250 hrs
The markets continue to trade in green after yesterday's loss with banking sector outperforming on the eve of FOMC meeting tonight. At 12.50 pm , the Sensex was up 133.83 points or 1.24% at 10946.47, and the Nifty was up 42.95 points or 1.36% at 3194.05.
About 1411 shares have advanced, 762 shares declined, and 91 shares are unchanged.
All BSE sectoral indices were trading in green.
The BSE bankex has outperformed the other indices, it was up by 2.44% at 4976 amid stocks like PNB, ICICI Bank, IOB and Karnataka Bank witnessing buying interest.
The BSE capital goods, FMCG and oil & gas indices were also up by 1.25%, 1.10% and 1.09% respectively.
Top gainers on the indices were ICICI Bank Rs 589.10 (3.70), Bharti Airtel Rs 404.00 (3.06), HDFC Rs 1258.30 (1.85), Tata Motors Rs 761.35 (1.59), PNB Rs 387.00 (5.45) and GlaxoSmithKline Rs 1067.80 2.58.
However, Ranbaxy Labs Rs 394.60 (-0.65), Hero Honda Rs 668.70 (-0.20), Cipla Rs 229.50 (-0.15), Tata Tea Rs 829.40 (-0.50), Zee at 262.80 (-0.49) and VSNL Rs 374.00 (-0.31) were the top losers on the indices.

AstraZeneca was quoting at Rs 703.00, up Rs 46.90, or 7.15%.
Financial Tech was quoting at Rs 1,150.00, up Rs 76.10, or 7.09%.
Radico Khaitan was quoting at Rs 136.25, up Rs 6.75, or 5.21%.
Geodesic was quoting at Rs 125.50, up Rs 6.95, or 5.86%.
BSE Small Cap gainers:
National Peroxide was quoting at Rs 233.25, up Rs 21.20, or 10.00%.
Dynamatic Technologies was quoting at Rs 879.80, up Rs 79.45, or 9.93%.
Sonata Software was quoting at Rs 31.90, up Rs 2.95, or 10.19%.
Cosmo Films was quoting at Rs 100.35, up Rs 7.80, or 8.43%.

The markets continue to trade strong with heavy buying in banking stocks. At 12.03 pm IST, the Sensex is up 145.81 points or 1.35% at 10958.45, and the Nifty up 42.45 points or 1.35% at 3193.55.
About 1374 shares have advanced, 660 shares declined, and 83 shares are unchanged.

Index heavyweight Reliance was trading at Rs 967.15 up 1.27% from its previous close of Rs 955.00.
Tech major Infosys was trading at Rs 1,680.50 up 0.37% from its previous close of Rs 1,674.30.
Cigarette major ITC was trading at Rs 171.25 up 1.66% from its previous close of Rs 168.45.
Sensex @ 1102 hrs:
The markets have gained further ground due to buying seen in scrips across sectors. At 11.02 am, the Sensex was up 112 points or 1.04% at 10924.64, and the Nifty was up 30.25 points or 0.96% at 3181.35.
About 1187 shares have advanced, 538 shares declined, and 49 shares are unchanged.
ICICI Bank at Rs 592.30 (4.26%), HLL at Rs 222.45 (1.37%), Tata Motors Rs 758.30 (1.18%), PNB at Rs 382.65 (4.26%) and GlaxoSmithKline at Rs 1,072.00 (2.98%) were top gainers on the indices.
Ranbaxy Labs at Rs 395.75 (-0.37%), Hero Honda Rs 668.85 (-0.18%), Cipla Rs 229.50 (-0.15%), BPCL Rs 303.00 (-0.66%) and HPCL Rs 212.65 (-0.49%) were the top losers on the indices.
Sensex @ 0957 hrs:
The markets opened in green in line with Asian peers. At 9:57 am, the Sensex was up 67 points at 10880 and the Nifty was trading at up 19 points at 3190.
US stocks slumped on near-record oil prices, Dow was down 21 points
Asian markets were trading higher. The Nikkei average rose 1.27% today, the broader TOPIX Index was up 1.07%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 75.34 points or 0.44% , South Korea's Seoul Composite rose 13.48 points or 1.05%, Taiwan Weighted was up 44.98 points or 0.70%. However, Singapore's Straits Times lost 3.67 points or 0.15% at 2,456.58.
On the indices BHEL is the biggest gainer.
Metal, cement and banking stocks are stable. PSU stocks are also doing well.
Hindalco, Tata Steel, SBI, ICICI Bank, TCS, Gujarat Ambuja were the gainers
Heavyweights Reliance, ONGC and HLL were down
