Sensex rallies 193 points, heavyweights lead

The Sensex opened 37 points higher at 9,746, but soon slipped into red to a low of 9,546 - down 200 points from the day's open. However, steady buying in realty, IT and energy stocks helped the index rebound into the positive zone.

The heavyweights - Reliance, Infosys, HDFC, ONGC and ICICI Bank - aided Wednesday's upmove. The index rallied to a high of 9,922 - up 376 points from the day's low. The Sensex finally ended with a gain of 193 points at 9,902.

The NSE Nifty ended at 3,060, up 39 points.

The BSE Realty index surged 5.4% to 1,645. The IT and Oil & Gas indexes rallied around 3% each to Rs 2,358 and 7,256, respectively.

The market breadth was extremely positive - out of 2,463 stocks traded, 1,822 advanced, 559 declined and the rest were unchanged on Wednesday.

INDEX MOVERS. . .

Ranbaxy zoomed 7.7% to Rs 178. HDFC and Reliance Infrastructrue soared 6.7% each to Rs 1,506 and Rs 550, respectively.

DLF surged 5.7% to Rs 177. ICICI Bank rallied 5% to Rs 349.

Infosys, Tata Power and Reliance moved up nearly 4% each to Rs 1,375, Rs 795 and Rs 1,579, respectively.

ONGC, Reliance Communications, HDFC Bank and Mahindra & Mahindra gained 3% each at Rs 804, Rs 180, Rs 997 and Rs 395, respectively.

Wipro and Maruti advanced 2.5% each to Rs 252 and Rs 794, respectively.

Tata Steel and ACC were up nearly 2% each at Rs 210 and Rs 587, respectively.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Sun Pharma slumped over 4% to Rs 1,065.

BHEL and Grasim plunged around 2% each to Rs 1,472 and Rs 1,545, respectively.

Bharti Airtel shed 1.7% at Rs 615. Sterlite and NTPC declined around 1% each to Rs 351 and Rs 178, respectively.

OTHER PROMINENT GAINERS...

Opto Circuits zoomed over 15% to Rs 116. Godrej Industries, BEML, Suzlon, HDIL, IRB Infrastructure, Uco Bank, Reliance Capital, JSW Steel, Unitech, Voltas, United Phosphorous and Sintex rallied 7-13% each.

...AND THE LOSERS

Bhushan Steel shed 6.5% at Rs 373. Lupin, Siemens, Power Grid, Jindal Steel, Apollo Hospital, BPCL, UltraTech Cemco, Godrej Consumer, Hero Honda, M&M Financial, Colgate, HPCL, GlaxoSmithKline Consumer, Madras Cement and Cummins declined 2-4% each.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

Reliance topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 282.18 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 246.43 crore), ICICI Bank (Rs 227.63 crore), Reliance Infrastructure (Rs 174.75 crore) and SBI (Rs 134.89 crore).

Unitech led the volume chart with trades of arounde 1.76 crore shares followed by Suzlon (1.66 crore), Reliance Natural Resources (1.26 crore), Cals Refineries (1.13 crore) and IFCI (99.19 lakh).
