Reliance Infocomm is to 'rush' WLL-based CDMA handsets from Korea to meet the increased demand, with the telecom major activating over 2.5lakh (250,000) connections within two days of rolling out its new scheme, Monsoon Hungama.

"The handsets will be rushed from LG and Samsung bases in Korea," highly placed sources said in Mumbai on Friday.

The goods would take around 11 hours to reach Mumbai and a day for customs clearance, they said.

The company's subscriber base has now crossed 20lakh (2 million), they said.

The demand was mainly from Mumbai and Delhi, followed by Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai, they said adding demand from second-rung towns like Ludhiana and certain towns in Uttar Pradesh were also 'high'.

"What other operators took eight years to achieve, we did it in a few months' time. This is the first time a telecom company, anywhere in the world, has activated these number of connections in a day," they said.

The lowering of the entry-level tariff, which enabled the lower-end of the telecom user pyramid to own a mobile phone, was the reason for the over-whelming response, they said.

The scheme, the sources said, is open 'till July 31 or stocks last'.

However, they said, the company would consider extending the scheme if public demand was high.

Under the Monsoon Hungama, which opened on Wednesday, Reliance Infocomm offers a handset and connection for an upfront payment of Rs 501.
