The rough and tough image of SUVs is now being presented in a more technologically upgraded form.
In the past 3-5 years, arguably Sports Utility Vehicles’ segment created maximum buzz in the market. Be it Mahindra XUV 500, Renault Duster or Ford EcoSport, all have triggered the interest of the buyers for this particular category of vehicles. Now the rough and tough image is being presented in a more technologically upgraded form. Taking all these things in mind, allow us to take you on a nostalgic journey giving a glimpse of top selling SUVs in the year 2014.
Mahindra Bolero
Bolero is one of the few vehicles in the country which is sold by its proven name. Fourteen years of presence in the Indian market, its popularity can be measured from the fact that it is still selling like hotcakes. In the first 11 months of 2014, Mahindra & Mahindra has retailed over 92,000 units which helped it gain the top position in the slot.
Along with robust design language, it is powered by 2.5L m2DiCR diesel engine that belts out 62bhp and 192Nm of max torque. A newer model is expected to replace the current one in 2015.
Ford EcoSport
It will not be an exaggeration to say that this is the only car in our list that has attracted the fastest number of bookings and the maximum customer inquiries since its launch. The compact SUV cemented the position of the American automaker in the Indian market, courtesy its killer looks and state of the art technologies.
Recently, it crossed the 100,000-sales mark both domestic and exports combined. To be precise, the 2014 sales figures from January to November stood at 47,703 units which shows how progressively it is marching forward. It is powered by 1.5L TiVCT engine and the popular 1.0L EcoSport petrol engines while diesel variants get power from 1.5L TDCi mill.
Mahindra Scorpio
Scorpio was launched a year after Bolero and has been a pride for the company. The SUV bagged the “Car of the Year” award from BBC World, which is itself a big achievement. Recently, Mahindra & Mahindra updated this robust SUV both cosmetically and technologically.
As far as sales are concerned, from the start of this year till November, the automaker managed to sell 47,496 units and with the next generation model in hand, the number will only grow. The SUV gets its energy from the same m2DiCr engine working in Bolero and the 2.2L mHawk diesel engine.
Renault Duster
Duster need no introduction as it has changed the way people think about Renault. After a wave of unsuccessful attempts in the Indian market, the French automaker finally unveiled the legend which took the company to new heights. Eye catching exteriors, premium grade interiors and dynamic driving ability have always been the USP of this compact SUV.
Just a few months back, Renault propped up this SUV further by introducing AWD model, a segment first and a sheer attempt to invade other segments as well. The car is only available in diesel trims viz; 1.5L 110PS and 85PS models. In 2014 (till November) it clocked 36,450 units.
Mahindra XUV 500
The macho SUV is the biggest and strongest from Mahindra India portfolio. It has fortified the company’s brand image since inception in 2011. Popularity of this SUV is equivalent to many sedans and compact SUVs in the market.
It runs on 2.2L mHawk diesel engine that produces 140bhp and max torque of 330Nm. The 2014 sales till November stood at 32,582 units.
