MTNL and BSNL have joined hands to lay a submarine cable system to connect India to South-East Asia and West Asia, to provide international bandwidth for their own as well as other commercial requirements.

This was announced by Union IT and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran on Tuesday, who added the ultimate intent of this cable system was to extend eventually to the US and Europe.

Maran asked the ambassadors of the West Asian countries present on the occasion, to bring down the landing costs of submarine cable which will eventually lead to bringing down bandwidth prices.

The minister, who inaugurated the Falcon submarine cable system here today, said in view of future bandwidth growth potential, all the operators are trying to have their own cable system to meet the future demand.

"In this regard, the India-Sri Lanka submarine cable project by BSNL is on the verge of being launched," he said.

Bandwidth is the key element for international connectivity for voice telephony and providing seamless connectivity to the software and BPO sector.
