The government is trying through industry chambers to get corporate world incorporate data on SC/ST recruitment, Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Mukul Wasnik told Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

Replying to questions, he said there were limited number of companies that have decided to provide information on SCs/STs employed them with.

Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, Confederation of Indian Industry and PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry have developed their respective Codes of Conduct on affirmative action for adoption by their members.

"It has been suggested to chambers of industry to explore whether their member-companies could incorporate data on SCs/STs recruited from January 1, 2007 in their annual reports," Wasnik said.

The minister said providing information by the companies is not compulsory and is a voluntary effort. "There is no proposal to come up with a legislation (to make it compulsory for companies to disclose SCs/STs employed)," he said.

A meeting has been convened on August 4 to discuss giving incentives to companies employing SCs/STs and backward classes.

CII has 8,051 member companies but only 55 have so far agreed to provide the requisite information. Another 50 companies may also give employment data, he said.
