Swiss pharmaceuticals giant Syngenta is planning to set up a radio chemistry laboratory in West Bengal.

The Basel-based company, a leader in radio isotope products and medical chemistry, has appointed city-based Chemgen Pharma International for a feasibility study.

Chemgen, a company of the US-based KPC Group, is expected to complete the feasibility study by January, 2006, Jyoti Chatterjee, president of the KPC Group, said.

If found viable, the first phase of the project would come up by the end of the next year, he said.

Chatterjee, who is also the president of the newly formed Overseas Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the US, said the OBCCI has signed a MoU with Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry on November 15 for projecting the strength of West Bengal as an investment destination in the global marketplace.

The partnership would be in the realms of cooperation and exchange of information to facilitate trade and investment in the state, India and the USA, exchange of trade delegations and extending support to each other in various field to promote good relationships between the members.

''The basic idea is to create a permanent forum to assess the state's needs and enable the NRIs to play a major role in the industrial development of the state,'' he said.

However, the initiative would not be restricted to NRI Bengalis and would open offices in other developed countries for creating awareness about the state's prospects.
