India's employment rate declines

The employment rate in the country declined marginally from 39.2 per cent to 38.6 per cent between 2009-10 and 2011-12, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

As per the results of two surveys conducted by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the estimated employment rate in the country has declined from 39.2 per cent to in 2009-10 and 38.6 per cent to 2011-12, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Kodikunnil Suresh said.

As per sample surveys conducted in 2004-05 and 2009-10, unemployment rate among person in the age group of 15-29 has marginally increased in both rural areas and urban areas, he said in a written reply.

The unemployment rate among rural youth was 3.9 per cent in 2004-05, but it increased to 4.7 per cent in 2009-10, while the unemployment rate among the urban youth was 4.2 per cent in 2004-05 and it went up to 4.6 per cent in 2009-10.

Unemployment rate among rural women in 2004-05 was 1.6 per cent and it increased to 1.7 per cent in 2009-10 while the unemployment rate among urban women declined from 5.7 per cent in 2004-05 to 5.2 per cent in 2009-10.
