Indian Railways' earnings up by over 12%

The Indian Railways has earned Rs 1,14,656.13 crore (Rs 1.14 trillion) during April-December 2014, registering an increase of 12.57 per cent. It had earned Rs 1,01,856.45 crore (Rs 1.01 trillion) during the same period in the previous year.

The total earnings from goods during April-December, 2014 were Rs 77,161.55 crore (Rs 771.61 billion) as compared to Rs 68,776.35 crore (Rs 687.76 billion) in the corresponding period in 2013, showing an increase of 12.19 per cent, according to the Railway Ministry data.

The earnings from passengers during this period were Rs 31,955.07 crore (Rs 319.55 billion) as against Rs 27,646.13 crore (Rs 276.46 billion) during the same period in 2013, registering an increase of 15.59 per cent.

The earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 3,021.94 crore during April–December 2014 as compared to Rs 2,862.19 crore (Rs 28.62 billion) during the same period in previous year, registering an increase of 5.58 per cent.

The total number of passengers booked during April-December 2014 were 6,256.16 million compared to 6,360.15 million during the same period in 2013, showing a decrease of 1.64 per cent.

The decline in passenger bookings is recorded in both the suburban and non-suburban sectors during this period.

In the suburban sector, the number of passengers booked were 3,409.61 million as against 3,416.02 million during the same period in the previous year, a decrease of 0.19 per cent.

There were 2,846.55 million passengers booked in the non-suburban trains compared to 2,944.13 million in the corresponding period in 2013, registering a decrease of 3.31 per cent.
