Even as the job market in financial sector hit globally by the collapse of major investment banks in US, the placement for the graduates of IIT-Guwahati remains unaffected.

"One IIT that is not affected (of this global crisis) is IIT Guwahati. The institute has had a policy of not allowing financial companies to make campus recruitment for many years now," IIT-G director Prof Gautam Barua told PTI.

"This policy has paid unexpected dividends this year with the collapse of many of these financial giants not affecting our institute's placements," he said.

"The logic is that this is an institute producing engineers and scientists, and it will provide support for employment to its students only in organisations that can usefully utilise their expertise," Barua said.

"The troubles of Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch and other financial companies have affected the placements in IITs.

To the best of our knowledge, no other IIT has restrictions on campus recruitment of B Tech and M Tech students by financial companies," the director said.

Recent media reports said that IIT alumni were turning to their alma maters for allowing them to participate in campus placements to help them find new jobs following the collapse of the financial giants.

Many IIT-Kanpur graduates who had joined the India operations of Lehman Brothers have requested their institute to permit them to participate in the 2009 placement, the reports said.
