Hyundai to invest $220 million in Chennai unit

Hyundai Motor India Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company S Korea, is investing an additional $220 million to expand the capacity of company's Chennai plant, a top company official said on Friday.

HMIL has sold over 5,00,000 cars in a record time of just over five years since the commencement of commercial production in September 1998, HMIL president B V R Subbu told reporters after launching KLG Hyundai in the city, a premium car dealership.

He said that the company's turnover stood at $50 billion and added that the Hyundai Motor group with its presence in 185 countries and combined annual sales of over three million units was one of the fastest growing auto manufacturer in the world.

He said the HMIL was presently making over 18 variants of passenger car across four models, Santro in the segment, Accent in the C segment, Sonata in D segment and Terracan in the SUV segment.

The new workshop, spanning over 25,000 sq ft, has advanced body shop, advanced upholstery cleaning and also offers online service booking, he said.

Multiple finance options and insurance options were also available under one roof, he said.
