"The portfolios handled by Thorat will temporarily be looked after by Gopinath until further orders," the central bank said.
During her deputy governorship, Thorat was handling the key departments of banking operations and development, banking supervision, currency management, rural planning, credit department and financial inclusion among others.
Though Anand Sinha, an executive director at the central bank, was late last month selected as the successor to Thorat, he is yet to get the orders from the finance ministry to assume office.
Thorat, who joined the RBI way back in 1972, was appointed as deputy governor in November 2005.
