GM India Feb sales up 42%

General Motors India on Wednesday said its sales grew 42 per cent in February 2005 and announced that expansion of its Halol plant would be completed later this month.

"We are ramping up production capacity to 60,000 units at out Halol facility to meet growing demand for cars. On being commissioned later this month, we would be able to quickly clear the backlog of Chevrolet vehicles - Tavera and Optra," vice president corporate affairs, GM India P Balendran said.

The Indian subsidiary of US-based GM Corporation sold a total of 1,859 cars in February 2005 as against 1,309 cars in the same month last year to record a growth of 42.02 per cent in monthly sales.

The growth was aided by Chevrolet Tavera which sold 1,300 units in February to take its tally to 11,541 since its mid-2004 launch.

The February sales also include 350 units of Chevrolet Optra and 207 units of Opel Corsa. The company manufactures Chevrolet Optra, Chevrolet Tavera, Opel Corsa Sail and Opel Swing at its Halol plant in Gujarat.

GM India also sells the imported Opel Vectra and Chevrolet Forester.
