General Motors India said on Wednesday that its vehicle sales rose by 41 per cent in May due to a surge in demand for the mid-size Opel Corsa.

The company sold 904 units against 641 units in the same month last year, a top company official told PTI in New Delhi.

Sale of the German-engineered Corsa model jumped 42.2 per cent to 768 units but that of premium mid-size car Opel Astra dipped by 10 units to 91 units, he said.

The company also sold 30 units of the luxury car Opel Vectra and 15 units of the recently-launched sports-utility-vehicle Chevrolet Forester during the review month.

However, Ford India reported a 28.4 per cent drop in sales of the mid-size Ikon and luxury model Mondeo at 1,133 units in May over 1,584 units a year earlier.

Exports also fell by 11 per cent year-on-year to 2,116 units from 2,375 units, a senior company official said.

But, Ford's domestic sales in May was higher by 11.4 per cent as compared to 1,017 cars sold in April this year.

General Motors India makes cars at its plant at Halol (Gujarat) while Ford India produces the Ikon at its plant outside Chennai.
