EPC Global, engaged in development of electronic product code and radio frequency identification technology, plans to set up a research and development facility in India for which it is in talks with the Indian Institutes of Technology and other premier institutions.

EPC Global, an affiliate of US-based not-for-profit organisation EPC Global Inc created by Belgium's GS1 International and US's Uniform Code Council, was launched in India in 2004 and aims to encourage the Indian industry, including retailers and exporters, adopt EPC network.

Electronic product code and RFID are increasingly being used for product authentication and theft prevention.

EPC Global is also organising a two-day seminar from Tuesday, highlighting the applications as well as benefits of EPC/RFID technology across retail, aviation, logistics, IT and pharmaceutical sectors.

Over 16 international speakers and 300 delegates from companies like IBM, Wipro, Gillette, M&M, ITC, Hong Kong Airport Authority and Pfizer will take part in the event and share actual implementations of RFID technology, international mandates and emerging global regulatory requirements.

"We will focus on actual experience sharing and case studies of RFID deployment across the world in order to trigger a discussion on early adoption of RFID in India," Ravi Mathur, CEO, GS1 India said.
