The Delhi government has issued an order to stop the registration of new three-wheel goods carriers within city limits.
This order, aimed at decongesting the city, will come into effect from September 1 this year. The order covers all three-wheel goods carriers, whether they run on diesel, petrol, compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas.
PR Meena, joint commissioner, operations (transport department), said the order covered only goods carriers and did not include three-wheel passenger carriers. Industry sources, however, said this order was contradictory to the Delhi government's plans.
"This order comes at a time when the transport department is planning to restrict the entry into the city of those heavy transport vehicles that are not headed for destinations in Delhi. Further, the government also intends to disallow the movement of large diesel goods carriers into the city," a source in the automobile industry said.
The plan is to terminate all heavy goods carriers outside Delhi and move them into the city with smaller CNG vehicles. The cost of intra-city transportation is expected to increase substantially due to the limitations caused by these policies.
