The Cellular Operators Association of India has asked the ministry of communications to release additional 20 MHz in the 1,800 MHz band in view of the increasing number of operators venturing into the GSM space.

In a letter to the ministry, COAI has pointed out that CDMA operators Reliance, HFCL and Shyam Telelink are focusing on GSM in their network expansion plans and there is a need for additional spectrum.

COAI said: "In order to fuel competition and growth, it is absolutely imperative that all players are assured adequate spectrum as per the prevalent spectrum policy and guidelines of the government."

It has asked the spectrum needs of the existing GSM operators as per prevalent guidelines to be safeguarded.
