Bharti to invest $900 mn in 05-06

Bharti Group offering mobile services under AirTel brand has become the first private telecom conglomerate to complete nationwide network in all 23 circles at an investment of Rs 15,000 crore (Rs 150 billion) till now.

Launching the celebrations in New Delhi, Sunil Mittal, Group chairman and managing director, announced an additional investment of $900 million (over Rs 4,000 crore) in the current financial year to expand operations.

To mark the celebration, Sunil Mittal would make a call to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday from Assam.

The company has now started focussing on expansion of fixed line telecom services eyeing a major market share in the broad band segment, Mittal said adding that rural coverage was another area of concern for the company.

"We have planned to cover between 2.5-3 lakh villages in 2005-06. We have set up 10,000 base stations in last 10 years but in the current fiscal alone we would be adding 10,000 base stations to reach every corner of the country," Mittal said.

Claiming to have a subscriber base of 12 million, he said company would be reaching a mark of 15 million soon.

On the eve of celebration, AirTel also launched India's longest car rally inviting participants from all around in partnership with Federation of Motor Sports Club of India, Ernst and Young, Ericsson and Apollo Tyres.
