Maruti Ignis will be the company’s smallest SUV. This micro SUV will be making its way into the Indian car market this year. This micro-size SUV have a footprint of a mid-size hatchback.
As the trend is moving towards SUVs, the company will want to encash on this. This will be the company’s third UV for the Indian car market. So, how good is this SUV? We share our detailed preview on it.
Maruti Ignis Price in India (Expected)
The company will try to price it close to the Ritz. This could be somewhat a replacement to that hatchback.
In terms of dimensions, it will be very much close to the Swift. The higher ground clearance will give it the SUV stance. So, for those who need an upgrade from the Wagon R, but something that is premium, this could be the one.

Expect the Ignis to be launched in India by November. This will be just after the festive season. At the moment, the company is not able to meet the current demands, and introducing this SUV could affect buyer’s sentiments.
Maruti Ignis design
An all new small SUV that has good presence, especially the front. The fascia makes it seem like a large SUV. The wide front grille stands out and it has large headlamp as well.
The headlamps even have LEDs, which stands out in the crowd. Move to the side and the design now moves towards being more trendy.
There is wheel at every corner that makes it stand out. The side profile looks stylish as the roof steeps into the boot.
There are matte-black alloy wheels that stand out and even the cuts on the C-pillar that adds on to the sportiness.
The rear can be mistook to be a hatchback also. But, it does look young and sporty. This SUV was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo in a matte blue colour, which did make it look premium.
Maruti Ignis interior
Considering the price bracket, the Ignis’ interiors looks a lot more premium. A large touchscreen dominates the centre console with climate control.
A new-generation Suzuki steering wheel is used on the Ignis. This is what makes the Ignis so much more appealing. A new set of dials have been used on this compact SUV and this makes it look fresh.
Airbags and ABS will be offered too, not sure if this will be from the base model itself. Maruti could offer it as a standard from base model as well.
This will be sold through the Nexa Experience and hence, it will maintain some amount of premium-ness.
Despite being a compact SUV, the Maruti Ignis has good enough space in both the rows.
Five people can sit in comfort without any issues. Then there is a decent size boot too. This makes it a good option to consider for those who need a vehicle with the same of a tall boy, however need higher ground clearance.
Maruti Ignis engine
Ignis will come with a 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engine options. The petrol is Maruti’s favourite engine, while the diesel is an all new one.
This is the three-cylinder version. Maruti will want to utilise lower capacity engines as this is for a compact segment.
The petrol is the company’s favourite engine. This is used on the Swift, Ritz, Baleno and now even on the Ignis. This is a highly refined engine and it has good drivability too.
The other strong aspect of this engine is its performance without any compromise on mileage. The Ignis petrol will also get an AMT. This will add to the conveneince factor and make things easier.
The diesel engine has good performance and at the same time, even good power too. This makes it a great option to consider.
There are talks that Maruti could get the 1.3-litre diesel engine, but still there is no confirmation. At the moment, Maruti Suzuki is working on getting its own engines and the Ignis will be the first to get a Maruti 1.2-litre diesel engine.
