Tatas plan a new Rs 300,000 car by 2011

April 19, 2010 17:03 IST

Sources in the automobile industry are claiming that the engineers at Tata Motors are planning a Rs 300,000-car.

Codenamed as Dolphin, and likely to be launched in the next 18-24 months, it will most likely be a farewell gift Ratan Tata. The car is expected to be powered by 800cc to 1 litre engine and would mark Tata's entry in the compact car segment - between Nano and Indica Vista. However, the company refused to either agree or deny the news.

Tata Motors is also very upbeat about its foreign plans especially for Tata Nano and the upcoming crossover Tata Aria. With the big, burly crossover Aria, Tata Motors is trying to grab a piece of the big truck loving US market on the lines of Mahindra 's Scorpio Pick Up. What Tata Aria actually needs is a powerful and efficient engine to make it big in the American market.

Similarly, the European electric version of Tata Nano Europa would start playing on European roads within 30 months. But the company has said nothing about launching the electric Nano in India. These Tata products -- Aria and electric Nano are eagerly awaited in the country and so is the Rs 300,000 car.
