The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation receives on an average 2,000 complaints monthly regarding leakages which has become a major cause of worry. In order to resolve the issue, the civic body would introduce 'water helpline' for citizens.

"We receive complaints from citizens regarding contamination and leakages of which leakages in the water pipelines are a major worry for us," said S S Korlekar, chief hydraulic engineer.

"We have also initiated action against slumdwellers near the water pipelines to plug the leakages. We would like to save at least 20 per cent of the 680 million litres of water that is wasted every day through leakages," Korlekar said.

The four-digit number for the water helpline will soon be finalised after approval from the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited.

"We would soon introduce water helpline where citizens can register their complaints and within 24 hours, the matter would be resolved. This is part of our Save Water Campaign," Korlekar said.

The civic body would organise a 'Jal Mela' workshop on March 23 at the All India Engineers Association, Haji Ali.
