Gmail is down!

February 24, 2009 18:15 IST

Have you tried logging into your Gmail account today?

Here's the message you'll probably get.

'We're sorry. . .

'. . . but your query looks similar to automated requests from a computer virus or spyware application. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.

'We'll restore your access as quickly as possible, so try again soon. In the meantime, if you suspect that your computer or network has been infected, you might want to run a virus checker or spyware remover to make sure that your systems are free of viruses and other spurious software.

'If you're continually receiving this error, you may be able to resolve the problem by deleting your Google cookie and revisiting Google. For browser-specific instructions, please consult your browser's online support center.

'If your entire network is affected, more information is available in the Google Web Search Help Center.

'We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope we'll see you again on Google.

'To continue searching, please type the characters you see below:

'If you can read this, you do not have images enabled. Please enable images in order to proceed.'

If you go to the Google support site, as the message suggests, a little box on the right hand side of the corner says

'2/24/2009

We're aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a number of users. This problem occurred at approximately 1.30AM Pacific Time. We're working hard to resolve this problem and will post updates as we have them. We apologize for any inconvenience that this has caused.'

A Google spokesman told the UK website Pocket-lint, 'We aren't sure what the problem is. Our engineers are working on it.'

The website adds that the service went down at around 10:20 am GMT (5 am IST) and, as yet, has failed to come back online. However, it says users have reported that they are still able to access email via their desktop inboxes and phones, suggesting the problem is related to just the website.
