Sensex rallies 283 pts; Tata Steel, ONGC surge

After opening 58 points higher at 9,359, the Sensex touched a low of 9,329 in opening trades. The index, thereafter, displayed firm movement throughout the day. Metal and capital goods stocks led today's upmove.

The Sensex rallied to a high of 9,602, and finally ended with a gain of 283 points at 9,584. The NSE Nifty ended at 2920, up 77 points.

The BSE Metal index surged 4.5% to 5,334, and the Capital Goods index gained 4% at 6,308.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,552 stocks traded, 1,549 advanced, 921 declined and the rest were unchanged on Monday.

INDEX MOVERS. . .

Jaiprakash Associates zoomed 8.5% to Rs 75. Tata Steel and Reliance Infrastructure soared around 7% each to Rs 200 and Rs 578, respectively.

Sterlite and ONGC surged around 6% each to Rs 281 and Rs 722, respectively.

Larsen & Toubro and HDFC rallied around 5.5% each to Rs 674 and Rs 1,491, respectively. ICICI Bank gained over 5% at Rs 428.

Hindalco moved up 4% to Rs 46. Tata Power and Reliance advanced around 3.5% each to Rs 780 and Rs 1,389, respectively.

Sun Pharma, Bharti Airtel and Tata Motors were up nearly 3% each at Rs 1,090, Rs 666 and Rs 141, respectively.

TCS, SBI, Maruti and Reliance Communications were up around 2.5% each.

VALUE & VOLUME TOPPERS

United Spirits topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 235 crore followed by Reliance (Rs 233.50 crore), Educomp Solutions (Rs 135.70 crore), Reliance Infrastructure (Rs 120.60 crore) and Reliance Capital (Rs 88.40 crore).

Cals Refineries led the volume chart with trades of around 2.54 crore shares followed by Wire & Wireless (1.44 crore), GVK Power (1.27 crore), Satyam (1.07 crore) and Unitech (86.50 lakh).
