Senior CPI-M leader Benoy Konar on Monday night rubbished the claim of Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee of having any talk on Sunday about giving back 300 acres of land from within the Tata project area to unwilling farmers.

It was nothing but a figment of imagination, Konar, CPI-M central committee member, told reporters after the party's state secretariat meeting on Monday night.

Ruling out conceding to any such demand, Konar said people would see through it if it was an attempt to sabotage the project.

Asked whether Banerjee's raising such demand was aimed at derailing the project, he said, "Let her try stopping the project. The people of West Bengal will not accept it".

Although the statement read out by Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi on Sunday did not mention the quantum of land to be returned to unwilling farmers mentioning only about the 'maximum' from within the small car project area, Banerjee insisted that 300 acres would be provided from within the area.
