India on Wednesday criticised the developed nations for failing to take effective steps to check greenhouse gas emissions and targeting the developing countries on global warming.
Pitching for transfer of clean technologies to enable the developing countries to adapt to climate change, Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal asked the developed nations to keep politics aside while addressing environmental issues.
Addressing a seminar on climate change in New Delhi, he said it was time to think about 'alternative and workable' solutions to address the issue of carbon emissions.
Referring to the international pressure on developing nations, including India and China, to cut down on carbon emissions, Sibal said the western world is only targeting the third world countries while they have failed to take effective measures to check pollution in their countries.
"Politics will only embroil us in problems and not solve it, we must hence keep away from it when dealing with environmental issues," he said.
The per-capita carbon emission in India is lower than the average of three tonnes per person prescribed under the UN convention of climate change, Sibal said adding that solutions have to be engineered to ensure that it does not increase.
Stressing that energy efficient fuels were the need of the hour, he said it was the responsibility of the people to think of alternative and workable solutions to pay back what we use from the nature.
"Nature must never go into liquidation," he said, adding that technology provides many a solution for problems but they do not always come cheap or are practical.
