Sensex ends up 82 points, BHEL declines 5%

The Sensex opened with a positive gap of 56 points at 15,806 and moved up to a high of 16,003 in late morning deals. Profit-taking at higher levels saw the index drop to a low of 15,699 in noon deals.

The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 82 points at 15,832.

The BSE IT index gained over 3% (120 points) to close at 3,765. The BSE Power index dropped 2.6% (81 points) to 3,055.

The market breadth was negative - out of over 2,600 scrips traded, nearly 1,400 declined on Thursday.

Index gainers

Satyam gained over 5% at Rs 428. Wipro also added over 5% at Rs 435.

While TCS moved up over 4% to Rs 886, Infosys was up over 2% at Rs 1,522.

HUL closed with a gain of over 3% at Rs 243. Reliance added over 2% at Rs 2,394.

Tata Steel and Hindalco added over 2% each on Thursday.

And losers

BHEL, which reported a provisional 17% increase in FY08 net profit, dropped over 5% to Rs 1,755. Reliance Energy declined over 3% to Rs 1,189.

Maruti and M&M slipped 3% each to Rs 788 and Rs 644, respectively.

Most active counters

Reliance Capital was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 250 crore followed by GSS America (Rs 245 crore), BHEL (Rs 219 crore), Reliance Petroleum (Rs 197 crore) and Reliance (Rs 195 crore).
