Keeping pace with the fast growing Indian IT industry, the Indian server market grew by 30 per cent year-on-year to reach $169 million (Rs 698 crore) in factory revenues during the second quarter of 2007, according to IDC Asia/Pacific Quarterly Enterprise Server Tracker, 2Q, 2007.

The expansion of the server market across key segments has seen a 12 per cent growth in unit shipments over the previous quarter. The overall India server market shipments during 2Q, 2007 aggregated to 35,615 units.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) bagged the top spot, both in terms of factory revenues as well as unit shipments during the second quarter of the year, followed by IBM.

In the same quarter, the India x86 Server market recorded revenues of nearly $108 million (Rs 445 crore), amounting to 33,323 unit shipments. This can be attributed to its impressive sales in the financial, infrastructure, distribution and manufacturing sectors. HP maintained its dominance in this field followed by IBM and Dell.

With a robust growth across all the verticals mentioned above, the non-x86/Unix servers also recorded nearly $55 million (Rs 227 crore) in sales, corresponding to 2,246 units during the second quarter of 2007.

Sun Microsystems took the top spot in the non-x86/Unix server segment followed by IBM and HP.

The Indian blade server market recorded a 165 per cent year-on-year growth in terms of factory revenues, corresponding to approximately 8 per cent of the total Indian server market revenues during the quarter.

According to the study, the growth in the shipment of blade servers is a clear indication of its rising popularity. It also points out that companies are becoming more conscious about manageability, space and cooling aspects of data centres.

The study also reveals that vendors have played a significant role in terms of launching new products and technology and creating awareness amongst users. Amit Dalal, analyst for server research, IDC India, said, "The India server market is poised to show strong momentum in the coming quarters as well. While demand for volume servers will increase beyond the metros, the need for scale will continue to create a demand for high-end and mid-range servers as well."
