Sensex conquers the 19,000-mark

The index touched a fresh all-time intra-day high of 19,096, and finally ended with a smart gain of 3.5% (640 points) at 19,059.

The Nifty gained 242 points to close at 5,670.

The Sensex took just four trading sessions to log the last 1,000 points.

The BSE Metal index soared over 9% to 16,200. The Bankex and Oil & Gas index surged over 4% each to 9707 and 11,053, respectively.

The market breadth was fairly positive - out of 2,838 stocks traded, 1,897 advanced, 876 declined and 65 were unchanged today.

INDEX MOVERS...

Reliance Energy (REL) zoomed almost 13% to Rs 1,847. ONGC soared 9% to Rs 1,191.

Tata Steel surged 7.5% to Rs 911. Maruti rallied 5.8% to Rs 1,160.

Hindalco and Bharti Airtel gained around 5.5% each at Rs 189 and Rs 1,127, respectively.

SBI and Reliance Communications advanced 5% each to Rs 1,957 and Rs 753, respectively.

NTPC, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank moved up over 4% each to Rs 227, Rs 1,490 and Rs 1,097, respectively.

Reliance surged 3.8% to Rs 2,664. HDFC added 3.4% to Rs 2,554.

BHEL and ACC were up around 3% each at Rs 2,413 and Rs 1,286, respectively. Tata Motors gained 2% at Rs 818.

...AND THE SHAKERS

Hindustan Unilever slipped 1% to Rs 219.

MOST ACTIVE COUNTERS

Jai Corp topped the value chart with a turnover of Rs 2,275.60 crore followed by Reliance Energy (Rs 484.40 crore), Consolidated Construction Consortium (Rs 453 crore), Reliance (Rs 369.70 crore) and Reliance Natural Resources (Rs 285.40 crore).

Reliance Natural Resources led the volume chart with trades of around 2.96 crore shares followed by Jai Corp (2.20 crore), Tata Teleservices (1.57 crore), Reliance Petroleum (1.32 crore) and Ispat Industries (1.30 crore).
