Faced with the government agencies' failure in wheat procurement and an increase in demand, the Central government may relax quality norms for imports from the US after 15 years.
According to officials, India had banned wheat imports from the US following differences in quality standards.
Now, officials said, the Centre is mulling relaxation of washing standards set by India for imported wheat to accommodate imports from the US.
Several US companies and farm sector have been lobbying
with India for this for quite sometime.
India is the world's second biggest wheat consumer
India is forced to import wheat this year as demand exceeded production. India had invited tenders last week for importing 1 million metric tonne wheat, one-third of this year's target.
Resumption of wheat supplies to India may boost shipments for several companies in the US. India is buying wheat for a second year to build reserves and may purchase as much as five million tonne this year.
