Ever wondered why the weight of a consumable item being sold in Maharashtra is mentioned in 'g,' i.e. in lower case, and never expanded to say, 'gms'?
The reason is simple. Whoever does so will have the law hot on his heels. The state government can launch prosecution against the guilty.
Speaking at the international business conference on Maharashtra Vision, Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce president Hemant Rathi said, amid laughter from the delegates, that several laws that govern internal trade in the state are arbitrary and have outlived their utility.
As per the Weights and Measurement Act and Packaged Commodity Rules, every packet should be quantified and if it is on weight basis, you have to mention it as 100 g or 200 g and not as 100 'gms' or 200 gms.'
Also this must always be in small 'g' letter. If you put a capital 'G,' you can be prosecuted under the Act, he said.
