With the commodities market growing in leaps and bounds, the prospects of agriculture students are very bright.

According to Ravi Chandran, chief general manager (surveillance in capital markets), Securities and Exchange Board of India, there will be plenty of career opportunities for agriculture students but they have to be clear about their career goals.

The SEBI official was speaking at a workshop on career guidance and job fair organised by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore.

Chandran urged students to be wary of getting confined to conventional vocations that offer temporary comforts and the security of geographical or language limitations.

Talking about areas of opportunities the agriculture students could look forward to, he said the buoyancy of the capital markets gives opportunity for experts in valuation and analytical jobs. Agri technology companies have begun to make a mark, he added.

Patent and copyrights regulations under the emerging World Trade Organisation region also present newer opportunities for agri graduates.

The opening of the agriculture clinics has brought about opportunities for the farm graduates to experiment their knowledge and entrepreneurial skills, stated Chandran.

The commodities market with a valuation of some Rs 30,000 crore (Rs 300 billion) is poised to grow further. Who will be better placed in bringing out analytical perception on these markets other than the agricultural graduates, Chandran asked.

The evolving career opportunities would test the worthiness of the candidates in terms of how relevant one would be rather than the pure knowledge he or she had, he noted.
