The Department of Telecom has initiated the process to fill the vacancies in the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India after retirement of two members.

While former DoT secretary Nripendra Misra took over as chairman TRAI few months ago when the incumbent Pradip Baijal retired, the slots of two full-time members -- D P S Seth and P K Sarma, who retired earlier this year, are still lying vacant.

The tenure of both the posts will not exceed three years or till 65 years of age, whichever is earlier, and the pay and allowances will be equivalent to that of a secretary to government of India.

One of the main criteria of the appointment is that the person must have held the post of secretary or additional secretary to the government of India or any equivalent posts in the central or
state governments for a period of minimum three years.

TRAI was set up after the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Act, 1997, then amended -- the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Act, 2000 -- specifying that the authority shall consist of a chairperson and not more than two whole-time members and not more than two part-time members.

The two part-time members are Arvind Virmani and Sanjay Govind Dhande.
