The US Agency for International Development and business conglomerate General Electric have launched a programme to promote commercially viable rural electrification in India using renewable energy technologies.

This public-private partnership, announced in Washington on January 26, would bring American expertise and technology to address one of India's most challenging development needs, a statement from the US Embassy said.

USAID would contribute up to $600,000 to the programme, while GE and its global network of experts and partners would invest up to $2.7 million in direct and indirect funding.

Karnataka and Maharashtra have been targeted as the first two states for implementation. The work is expected to begin in the middle of this year, the release said.
