Sensex down 42 points at 13,340

The markets witnessed extreme gyration during the trade today and cracked in the last one hour before close on the back of selling pressure in the auto, bank, capital goods and IT stocks.

The Nifty breached the 3800 level and the Sensex was slightly above 13300 mark despite the positive figures from the Indian export market.

The Sensex closed at 13,340, down 42 points. The Nifty lost 16 points to close at 3,816.

The BSE midcap index was down 0.38% or 21.38 points at 5574.40 and the BSE small index was down 0.21% or 13.94 points at 6,620.86.

The auto index fell 0.50% or 25.93 points at 5205.23. Tata Motors, Hero Honda, Sundaram-Clayto,  Apollo Tyres and Cummins ended in negative terrain.

The bankex tumbled 1.01% or 69.68 points at 6841.88. Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, Allahabad Bank, Oriental Bank and ICICI Bank slid.

The capital goods index dropped 0.76% or 67.26 points at 8826.71. Gammon India, Alstom Projects, Bharat Elec, Lakshmi Machine and Thermax closed in red.

The FMCG, healthcare and IT indices closed flat at 1902.59, 3684.38 and 5040.88 respectively.

However, the metal index was up 0.45% or 38.76 points at 8644.17. Hindustan Zinc, Hindalco, Ispat Industries and Jindal Stainless ended up.

The oil & gas index was up 0.33% or 20.15 points at 6039.31. Aban Offshore, BPCL, Essar oil, GAIL and HPCL ended in green.

The total turnover for today was Rs 60524 crore, out of which NSE and BSE cash turnover stood at Rs 10048.68 crore and 4394.68 crore respectively. The NSE F&O turnover was Rs 46081 crore.
