Gurudas Dasgupta, veteran Communist Party of India leader, has urged the Union finance minister to spell out his job so that the nation can understand what he thinks of his role as the finance minister.

Dasgupta was addressing a press conference in the parliament house complex on Thursday afternoon.

"The finance minister should curb the rising prices and curb inflation. It seems that P Chidambaram has forgotten his basic duties as the finance minister of India. Wherever he goes he keeps on saying what he has done on the reforms front. I would appeal to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to remind Chidambaram that the latter must check prices and inflation both of which are rising," he said.

The CPI leader also expressed anguish over 'judicial activism' and demanded a national debate on the issue.

He alleged that the judiciary was interfering with the legislature and felt that the practice had now become frequent.

Dasgupta suggested that the sessions of Parliament should not be shortened so that important issues could be discussed thoroughly.

He plans to bring a private member's Bill on Thursday to highlight his concern on the subject.
