In a bid to pressurise the United Progressive Alliance government to implement the National Common Minimum Progamme, employees of public sector undertakings, banks, insurance companies and the central and state government have decided to participate in the Left Front sponsored strike on September 29.

"We strongly oppose UPA government's lack of commitment in implementing the NCMP so far. Therefore, we have decided to hold nationwide strike on September 29 in which all the central, state government, bank, insurance, PSU employees will participate to put pressure on the government," president of Centre for Indian Trade Unions and Polit Bureau member M K Pandhe told reporters in Ludhiana on Monday.

Strongly assailing the divestment policy of the UPA government, Pandhe, who is in Ludhiana to attend a state level convention of National Platform of Mass Organizations, took exception to the reported move to sell stakes in Airport Authority of India to a foreign company.

He also said divestment in AAI, which earned a profit of Rs 550 crore (Rs 5.5 billion) this year, would be a  "security threat" to the nation.

"We are not opposed to foreign direct investment provided it should bring employment, new technology and not be a threat to domestic industry," he said calling for a comprehensive legislation on service conditions and social security for un-organised sector.
