The Sensex came within striking distance of 8,000 today. After opening on a subdued note at 7,901, the index zoomed to a high of 7,983 in morning deals. After staying above the 7,900 throughout the session today, the Sensex finally closed with a gain of 25 points at 7,925.
The Nifty gained 18 points to close at 2,423.
All the sectoral indices, except BSE Teck and BSE Auto, closed with gains. The BSE Consumer Durables Index moved up over 2% (52 points) to 2,512.
The BSE Metal index was up a per cent (61points) at 6,530. The BSE FMCG and Capital Goods indices also closed with gains of over 1% each. The BSE Teck index declined 0.7% (14 points) to 2,049.
The broad market continued to be bullish - out of 2,660 scrips traded, 1,471 advanced, 1,142 declined and 47 were unchanged today.
ITC moved up 3.4% (Rs 59) to Rs 1,793. While SBI was up Rs 12 at Rs 817, ONGC added Rs 11 to Rs 989. HLL slipped Rs 3 to Rs 166. Reliance was down a notch at Rs 731.
Gujarat Ambuja was up 4.7% (Rs 3) at Rs 72. Hindalco was firm right through the day, and closed with a gain of Rs 5 at Rs 148. Hero Honda gained 1.8% (Rs 13) to Rs 696.
Cipla advanced over 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 355. Ranbaxy, ACC, ICICI Bank, L&T, NTPC, Reliance Energy, Tata Motors and Wipro also moved up today.
TCS declined 1.3% (Rs 19) to Rs 1,410. Infosys slipped over a per cent (Rs 29) to Rs 2,356.
Bajaj was down over a per cent (Rs 17) at Rs 1,487. Grasim, HDFC, Satyam, Maruti, Tata Power and Tata Steel also declined today.
Reliance was the most active counter with a turnover of Rs 77 crore followed by Reliance Capital (Rs 73 crore), Sterling Biotech (Rs 57 crore), HT Media (Rs 56 crore) and IFSL (Rs 53 crore).
