Should the finance minister resign?
September 02, 2005 13:00 IST

Finance Minister P Chidambaram is in a jam, with the Opposition demanding his resignation as his lawyer wife Nalini appeared as counsel for the revenue department -- which is under the finance ministry's purview -- in an income-tax case.

The finance minister said he was unaware of his wife's appointment otherwise he would have spiked it. But the Opposition is

not buying the argument and wants him to quit.

'PC' has also been under fire for levying the fringe benefit tax that proposes to tax all perks given to employees, including medical benefits. Although the tax is on the employer, companies are designing new salary packages in such a way that the employee bears the burden.

Do you feel the issue is not big enough to call for the finance minister's resignation? Or do you think he should quit?
