Sensex closes at a new high of 9,067

The Sensex created history today by closing above the 9,000-mark for the first time.

The Sensex opened on a subdued note at 8,908 (as against the last close of 8,907), which turned out to be the low for the day. Sustained buying saw the index move past the 9,000-mark in noon deals.

Renewed buying in heavyweights in late noon deals saw the index zoom to a record high of 9,081 - an intra-day rally of 173 points. The Sensex finally closed with a gain of 161 points (1.8%) at 9,067.

The Nifty gained 50 points to hit a new high of 2756.

TCS zoomed over 4% (Rs 67) to Rs 1,686. Infosys gained 2% (Rs 55) to Rs 2,874. While Satyam was up Rs 9 at Rs 673, Wipro was up Rs 6 at Rs 441.

ONGC advanced over 3% (Rs 33) to Rs 1,127. Reliance added over 2% (Rs 18) to Rs 864. SBI was up Rs 12 at Rs 898.

BHEL zoomed over 4% (Rs 57) to Rs 1,441. Reliance Energy gained over 4% (Rs 25) to Rs 656. Tata Power was up 2.8% (Rs 12) at Rs 444.

Hero Honda gained 3.7% (Rs 30) to Rs 855. Bajaj moved up 3.4% (Rs 68) to Rs 2,082. While Maruti was up Rs 19 at Rs 644, Tata Motors gained Rs 11 to Rs 575.

Grasim gained 2% (Rs 29) to Rs 1,389. L&T added Rs 18 to Rs 1,707. Tata Steel was up Rs 10 at Rs 358. ACC, Bharti, HDFC, ICICI Bank, Hindalco and Ranbaxy also finished with gains today.
