The Chinese film industry has started discussing with cellphone major Nokia the possibility of developing 'mobile film', considered the fifth-generation medium.

Famous Chinese film director Tian Zhuangzhuang and director-cum-cameraman Gu Changwei discussed the development of mobile film with Nokia officials in Beijing, media reports said on Friday.

The film directors were "enthusiastic" about shooting films for displaying on a mobile handset, which is regarded as the fifth-generation medium.

Gu said that the "real charm" of mobile films comes from public participation, while Tian even said his students in the Beijing Film College could do their homework by shooting mobile films.

Vice-president of the Nokia (China) Investment Co Ltd Deng Yuanyun expressed the wish to cooperate with the Beijing Film College in developing films to be preloaded in Nokia mobile handsets.

Deng demonstrated several mobile handsets that support mobile video, Xinhua news agency reported. According to Deng, the "bottleneck" for developing "mobile film" is the restriction of data flow, so it is impossible for people to experience the smooth data flow on the existing networks of China Mobile and China Unicom, two leading mobile telecommunications networks.

However, Deng was optimistic that the 3G technology, which is key to the popularisation of "mobile film", will definitely become "mature" before the 2008 Olympic Games, to be held in Beijing.
