In a highly volatile trading session today, the index, led by a steep fall in PSU frontliners, crashed by a whopping 372 points during the intra-day trades.
Soon after touching a high of 5,416 on selective buying support during the early morning trades, the index tumbled from higher levels to remain weak thereafter following correction in most of the old economy stocks.
The statement of CPI and CPM on the scrapping of disinvestment of all the profit-making PSUs, sent the markets crashing in early noon deals. The market was in total shambles towards the closing hours, as the index plunged below the 5,100-mark to touch a low of 5,051.
The Sensex wrapped up the session with a huge slump of 6.10% (down 330 points) at 5,070. The Nifty shed 7.87% (down 135 points) to close at 1,582.
BSEPSU index dropped 14.41% in a highly charged selling session today.
ONGC plummeted 12.47% (Rs 103) to Rs 723. SBI tanked 14.77% (Rs 89) to Rs 515.
BHEL dropped 14.80% (Rs 83) to Rs 479. HPCL lost 12.81% (Rs 49) to Rs 331. MTNL declined 13.10% (Rs 17) to Rs 115.
Hindalco crashed 5.81% (Rs 55) to Rs 890. While HDFC shot down nearly 8% (Rs 47) to Rs 541, HDFC Bank was dwon nearly 3% (Rs 11) at Rs 361.
Bharti dipped 10.25% (Rs 16) to Rs 144. While ICICI Bank shed 6.95% (Rs 20) to Rs 265, Reliance Energy slipped 9.29% (Rs 66) to Rs 641. Tata Power succumbed to heavy losses by closing 10.51% lower (Rs 38) at Rs 323. Tisco was down 9.25% (Rs 29) at Rs 289. Zee dropped 8.51% (Rs 11) to Rs 113.
Grasim slumped 6.37% (Rs 74) to Rs 1,081. While ACC lost 5% (Rs 14) to Rs 267, Gujarat Ambuja was down 3.78% (Rs 12) at Rs 311. L&T also ended lower by 5.61% (Rs 30) to Rs 513.
Reliance dropped 6.77% (Rs 35) to Rs 477. While ITC dipped 3.48% (Rs 33) to Rs 914, HLL closed down a tad at Rs 141.
Infosys lost 2.26% (Rs 118) to Rs 5,082. While Wipro crashed 3.62% (Rs 58) to Rs 1,546, Satyam closed down a rupee at Rs 312.
Tata Motors shed 7.45% (Rs 33) to Rs 413. While Bajaj was down 2.14% (Rs 20) at Rs 913, Hero Honda slipped nearly 2% (Rs 8) to Rs 443.
